🌱 What Is Biochar and Why It Matters

Biochar: The Hidden Hero in Climate Change

Turn agricultural waste into climate action.

What Is Biochar?

Biochar is a charcoal-like substance made by burning organic waste—such as crop residue, corn cobs and corn stalks—in a low-oxygen environment. This process, called pyrolysis, captures carbon that would otherwise be released as CO₂ into the atmosphere.
When added to soil, biochar becomes a long-term carbon sink while improving the soil’s ability to hold water, nutrients, and support plant growth.

✅ Locks carbon away for centuries
✅ Improves soil health and productivity
✅ Reduces air pollution from crop burning

Why It Matters

Climate change hits hardest where people have the least resources to adapt. That’s why biochar is so powerful—it's a low-cost, local solution that delivers real environmental and economic benefits.

Biochar helps by:
  • 🌍 Capturing Carbon: Each ton of biochar locks up to 2 tons of CO₂.
  • 🌾 Restoring Soils: Improves fertility and crop yields without synthetic fertilizers.
  • 💨 Stopping Pollution: Replaces burning of crop waste, a major cause of PM2.5 air pollution.
  • 🛠️ Empowering Communities: Simple tools and training make it accessible to even the smallest farms.

Our Impact at Warm Heart

We’ve brought biochar education and production to communities across Asia and Africa. Our hands-on approach includes:
  • Training over 20,000 smallholder farmers
  • Creating demonstration sites that showcase sustainable farming
  • Developing income-generating opportunities from biochar sales and compost
  • Capturing thousands of tons of CO₂ in the process

"Since using biochar, my crops grow stronger—even in dry seasons.”
— Amina, Malawi farmer and trainer
At Warm Heart, we meet farmers where they are—literally. We work side-by-side with them to build simple trench kilns, TLUD barrels, and other low-tech systems suited to their local biomass. Every training includes:
  • Choosing the right feedstock
  • Building a safe biochar system
  • Using biochar for soil, compost, or briquettes
  • Teaching others in the community

Take Action

You don’t need to be a farmer to fight climate change. When you support our work, you're helping reduce emissions, improve food security, and give farmers a real climate solution.
Donate now Support Small Farmers to:
  • Train more farmers
  • Expand our demonstration sites
  • Help us scale biochar around the world
