🌍 Biochar in Africa: A Simple Solution, A Growing Movement
Across East and Central Africa, smallholder farmers face harsh realities: poor soil, unpredictable weather, and relentless crop loss. Fires rage to clear land, filling the air with deadly smoke, while expensive fertilizers remain out of reach.
But one woman is sparking a quiet revolution—armed with nothing but knowledge, a shovel, and a commitment to share.

✨ Meet Sr. Paulette: Lighting the Way with Biochar
In Zomba, Malawi, Carmelite nun Sr. Miriam Paulette leads Warm Heart’s biochar movement.
What she teaches is a hands-on, low-cost method of turning crop waste into biochar, a soil enhancer that:

What she teaches is a hands-on, low-cost method of turning crop waste into biochar, a soil enhancer that:
- Restores damaged land
- Improves yields and water retention
- Reduces CO₂, black carbon, and PM2.5
- Improves animal health when used in feed or bedding
Her motto is simple:
"A candle loses nothing by lighting another.”
Her only request of every farmer she trains?
“Teach one more.”

🔥 From Fires to Fertile Fields
Biochar is a proven, ancient solution made by burning biomass in a low-oxygen pit or drum. Even the poorest farmers can do it—with a shovel and a bit of knowledge.

- Drum biochar systems for those with access to barrels
- Trench and pit biochar for those with only soil and a shovel
🌱 Growing Farmer to Farmer
What began as a small experiment has grown into a movement:
- Farmers across Malawi, Burundi, Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, and Tanzania are now making and using biochar.
- They’re growing corn, millet, vegetables—and raising pigs, chickens, cows, even quail—with healthier soil and stronger animals.
- And yes, they’re teaching their neighbors.
💚 Help Us Keep the Fire Going
