Warm Heart’s Sustainable Agriculture program provides practical, affordable solutions that farmers can use with locally available materials. Through hands-on training, we help farmers improve their soil, increase crop production, reduce expenses, create new sources of income, and become more resilient to climate change.

Turning Agricultural Waste Into Opportunity
In many farming communities, crop waste is burned because farmers have few affordable alternatives. This creates heavy smoke, contributes to dangerous air pollution, and releases carbon into the atmosphere.
Through our “Stop the Smoke—Use Biochar” initiative, farmers learn how to convert corn cobs, rice straw, branches, and other agricultural waste into biochar.
When properly added to the soil, biochar can help:
- Retain water and nutrients
- Improve depleted soils
- Reduce fertilizer costs
- Support healthier crops
- Store carbon in the ground for generations
Biochar can also provide farmers with additional income. Depending on local needs and markets, farmers may produce biochar for their own land or sell it as a soil amendment to other growers.
What was once considered waste becomes a valuable resource for healthier farms, cleaner air, and stronger rural economies.

Warm Heart’s Young Smart Farmers initiative helps introduce young people to modern, environmentally responsible farming methods.

From Thailand to Communities Across Africa
Warm Heart’s sustainable agriculture work began in rural Thailand and has grown through partnerships and farmer-to-farmer training.
Our early biochar work in Thailand showed that agricultural waste could be transformed into something valuable. That experience helped create a practical model that has since spread to farming communities in Kenya, Malawi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, The Gambia, Liberia, Nigeria, and beyond.
Today, more than 30,000 farmers have received biochar training, and more than 19,962 tons of carbon have been sequestered through this growing movement.
The strength of the program lies in its ability to spread. Farmers learn the techniques, use them on their own land, and share their knowledge with neighboring farmers and communities.
Measurable, Long-Term Results
A survey of 381 participants across 11 African districts found encouraging results:
- Farm revenue increased by 96%
- Fertilizer costs decreased by 61%
- Approximately 80% of farmers were still using biochar seven years after their training
- 63% of participating farmers were women
- 258.1 tons of biochar were produced
- Approximately 450 tons of carbon dioxide were removed from the atmosphere
These results demonstrate that sustainable agriculture can create lasting environmental, economic, and social benefits.
